Paul Mitchell Protools Express Review

With ion-infused plates, this flat iron is designed to transform hair from frizzy straw, to soft, luxurious locks.

Though the primary function of this flat iron is to straighten hair, it is fully equipped to curl, flip, and wave hair, for a variety of different styles. It is even approved for color-treated hair, which some flat irons can sap of life and moisture.

Features

Paul Mitchell Protools Express

The ionic plates seal moisture into the hair, rather than sap it away, wicking away frizz while improving volume, texture, and shine. Whether you want perfectly straight hair, or shiny, perfect curls, this is the styling tool for you.

At only one pound, this Paul Mitchell Protools Express Ionstyle Professional Styler is one of the lightest flat irons on the market.

The one-inch straightening plates are cushioned to prevent snagging and pulling of the hair, and are also infused with silicone, to help the plates both grip the hair and let it slide smoothly across the hot ceramic plates.

The ionic-infused plates also help to decrease static and improve the smoothness and shininess of hair. The unit comes only in silver, stamped with the Paul Mitchell logo.

The good

This flat iron effectively straightens hair without snagging, crimping, or pulling the hair, creating a soft, voluminous texture. Unlike other flat irons that leave hair feeling crisp, the Paul Mitchell Protools Express Ionstyle Professional Styler leaves hair looking shiny and feeling soft.

With even heating and a range of temperatures to choose from, it is easy to get the best straightening on any type of hair, even very coarse and very thick hair. The slim design makes it perfect for flat ironing even the shortest hair, and for straightening out kinks close to the scalp.

The bad

The higher heat settings can leave fine hair feeling fried, and some women have discovered that the silicone strips on the straightening plates actually grip and pull their hair, rather than help to create a silky, straight finish.

If you have very thick, curly hair, this might not be the best flat iron for you, as the silicone strips will probably snag at your hair as you pass it through. Though they are designed to help guide the hair, some women find that it actually does the opposite, especially because straightening very curly hair often requires the individual to clamp the flat iron firmly over the hair.

Our verdict

This flat iron is best for women who have thick, straight, or wavy hair, who want a multipurpose hair styling implement that can carry replace almost every other styling implement.

Because this tool seals moisture into the hair shaft, instead of steaming it away, it is even possible to use this flat iron on slightly damp hair, which can cut down on styling times and heat damage that other styling implements can cause. For the price, it is a well-constructed, functional device, that will help you create soft, beautiful hair for years to come.
